Turning Waste into Value with Mo Balapour, CEO & Co-Founder @ SusMaX
Mo Balapour turned a Drexel PhD project on coal ash into SusMaX, a company recycling landfill waste into construction aggregate.
Mo Balapour is the CEO and Co-Founder of SusMaX, a cleantech company working with legacy coal power plants to recycle their industrial waste into construction aggregate. By transforming a long-standing environmental liability into a usable building material, SusMaX is creating a practical circular economy solution for one of the most polluting sectors in the energy industry.
Mo joined The Grove podcast, produced by Earth Onward, for a conversation recorded in person about the origins of SusMaX and the problem it set out to solve. He walked host through what it means to work alongside legacy utilities, why coal ash and similar byproducts represent an underutilized resource rather than just a disposal challenge, and how SusMaX is building a business model around that opportunity. The episode gave listeners a close look at how founders in the industrial sustainability space approach deeply entrenched systems and find commercially viable ways to change them.
Mo's work sits at the intersection of waste management, construction materials, and energy transition, making him a distinct voice in the cleantech conversation. His appearance on The Grove was made possible through Earth Onward's partnership with Clean Tech Growth Lab.
