Carbon Recycling with Freya Burton, CSO @ LanzaTech
Freya Burton turned steel mill pollution into ethanol, proving a 'biologically impossible' process commercial by 2018.
Freya Burton is Chief Sustainability Officer at LanzaTech, a company she has been part of since its earliest days as a founding employee. Over her two decades with the organization, she has watched the clean technology sector transform from a fringe conversation into a central pillar of global industry. LanzaTech sits at the center of that shift, having developed a technology that captures industrial pollution and converts it into products that would otherwise require fossil fuels, a feat long considered impossible.
On The Grove, LanzaTech's podcast produced by Earth Onward, Freya joined host Mai for a wide-ranging conversation about carbon recycling and what sustainability actually means in practice. Drawing on twenty years of experience inside the same company and the same industry, she offered a perspective rarely found in sustainability circles, one built on continuity, institutional knowledge, and firsthand observation of how the field has matured. Her insights reflect not just technical expertise but the longer arc of what it takes to build a business around a genuinely new idea and see it through to real-world impact.
